Bankers Life and Casualty Company—a 126-year-old insurance firm focused exclusively on the needs of senior Americans—has long been recognized for its family culture. Finding itself in an increasingly competitive marketplace in which the culture lacked the aggressive stance it felt necessary to drive future success, and with a new CEO at the helm, the company set out to build a new leadership culture that would incorporate team skills and performance management systems to replace previous emphasis on subject matter knowledge.
Michael Bruens, now assistant vice president of Bankers Learning Network, was the third employee in the training department, hired as a training and organizational development specialist. Based on his experience as a corporate trainer and consultant, he was given responsibility for the leadership development program.
